Over the last four years, Emily has been a constant force in my writing life, supporting me and nurturing my abilities as I went from unemployed to earning bylines in major publications. As both a colleague and mentor, Emily is always patient, willing to engage in conversation, and always, always open to help. She listens to me as I moan endlessly about white editors overseeing aspects of diversity reportage, but, more importantly, her talents as an editor and as an ally have continually helped me and other BIPOC writers work their way to an overwhelmingly white audience. Her sensitivities as an editor astound me, especially because they are largely missing in this industry. I know of very few editors with Emily’s qualifications and qualities, who take the time to brainstorm pitch ideas with writers they don’t know via social media on the daily, and workshop unsold pitches.
